BACKGROUND: In patients with severe forms of Parkinson's disease (PD), deep brain stimulation (DBS) commonly targets the subthalamic nucleus (STN). Recently, the mean 3-D Morel-Atlas of the basal ganglia and the thalamus was introduced. It combines information contained in histological data from ten post-mortem brains.

The subthalamic nucleus and the external pallidum (GPe) are classically viewed as part of the so-called indirect pathway, which acts in concert with the direct pathway. The direct and indirect pathways form the conceptual framework of the anatomical and functional organization of the basal ganglia. The subthalamic nucleus is a diencephalic gray matter portion of the basal ganglia, and the only portion of the ganglia that produces an excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate. The role of the subthalamic nucleus is to stimulate the SNr-GPi complex and it is part of the indirect pathway . 2002-12-01 · Subthalamic nucleus (STN) neurons have a pivotal role in basal ganglia, as a result of their intrinsic membrane properties, connections within the circuit and glutamatergic nature.

This discussion was renewed recently by Johnston and Hoon (1999), who compared three conditions in children: pyruvate dehydrogenase complex deficiency with a Leigh-like presentation and lesions in the basal ganglia (Fig. 3.2); kernicterus with abnormalities prominently involving the globus pallidus but also involving the nucleus subthalamicus (Fig. 3.3); and posthypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

The subthalamic nucleus is the sole excitatory structure within the basal ganglia. Given its central position influencingmany basal ganglia nuclei, it is likely to play an important role in the processing that is performed by the basal ganglia. In this thesis a theoretical analysis of the subthalamic nucleus is presented. Subthalamic nucleus (STN) neurons have a pivotal role in basal ganglia, as a result of their intrinsic membrane properties, connections within the circuit and glutamatergic nature. “The basal ganglia are the doors that, when unlocked, may release into action functions outside of the Basal ganglia play a central role in the control of mo- basal ganglia” (Llinas, 2000).

subthalamic nucleus: [TA] a circumscript nucleus, shaped like a biconvex lens, located in the ventral part of the subthalamus on the dorsal surface of the peduncular part of the internal capsule immediately rostral to the substantia nigra. The nucleus receives a massive topographic projection from the lateral segment of the globus pallidus and
